❄️ The Nordic Site of Peisey-Vallandry
One of Peisey-Vallandry’s greatest assets lies beyond the alpine slopes, its Nordic site, a serene haven nestled in an exceptional natural setting.
🎿 Cross-country skiing and winter walks weave through peaceful forests and open meadows, offering a sense of calm and relaxation that words can hardly capture and it’s something you truly have to experience.
🌫️ From December to late January, the area enters a unique phase where the sun disappears for several weeks, casting a soft, muted light over the landscape. It’s a moment of quiet magic, perfect for introspection or simply embracing the stillness of winter.
💸 And if you need one more reason to give it a try: cross-country skiing is significantly more affordable than alpine skiing — making it a great way to enjoy the mountains without breaking the bank.
🎿 Cross-Country Skiing in Peisey-Vallandry
The Nordic domain stretches gracefully between Camping des Lanchettes and Rosuel, taking full advantage of the winter closure of the Lanches village and the road between Pont Baudin and Rosuel. This creates a tranquil, car-free corridor of pristine snow and silence.
🏔️ Glide around the biathlon stadium, where loops and gentle slopes invite both beginners and seasoned skiers. Rediscover the summer hiking trails under a blanket of snow, or challenge yourself on the steep black runs that snake through the terrain.
🌲 Wander through snow-draped forests, or ski right through the heart of the sleeping village of Lanches, where time seems to pause and nature takes center stage.
👨🏫 The ESF (French Ski School) offers lessons with instructors who are not just skilled, but genuinely warm and welcoming. Among them is Marius Perrot, brother of Eric (see below), known for his friendly spirit and expert guidance. The atmosphere is laid-back and supportive, and thanks to the site's low footfall, you’ll often find yourself alone in the wild, surrounded by nothing but snow and silence.
⛷️ And finally, be ready to answer the ultimate question every Nordic skier faces: Classic (in the tracks) or skating style?

🎯 Biathlon: Precision Meets Endurance

Did you know that Éric Perrot, a proud native of Peisey and member of the French national biathlon team, began his journey right here? He’s not just a local hero — he’s living proof of the region’s sporting spirit. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of him training on home snow, gliding through the trails with laser focus.
🏁 The local ski club features a dedicated biathlon section, offering visitors a chance to step into the boots of a biathlete. Whether you're a seasoned cross-country skier or a curious beginner, you can combine skiing with marksmanship, or just test your aim in a friendly shootout to see who’s the sharpest shot.
🔫 Learn how the targets work, master the shooting technique, and get hands-on with the rifles used in competition. Spoiler alert: it’s far trickier than it looks! Balancing heart-pounding skiing with the stillness required for precision shooting is a challenge that will leave you both exhilarated and humbled.
🌞 And the fun doesn’t stop when the snow melts: biathlon activities are also available in summer, offering a unique off-season experience with running or roller skiing paired with target shooting.
🚶♂️ Winter Walks & Snowshoe Adventures
The Nordic site offers groomed pedestrian trails where all you need is a sturdy pair of après-ski boots.
❄️ After a fresh snowfall, when the paths haven’t yet been groomed, snowshoes can be especially helpful.
🌄 For the more adventurous, marked but ungroomed snowshoe routes lead you off the beaten path into hidden pockets of alpine paradise: quiet, untouched, and breathtaking.
🗺️ Explore the area around the Palais de la Mine, trek all the way to Rosuel, or wander through the silent village of Lanches, closed for winter and wrapped in stillness. Along the way, you’ll encounter local wildlife and alpine flora, and feel as if you’ve stepped into another world.
🐕 Dogs on leashes are welcome on the pedestrian trails, making it a perfect outing for you and your four-legged companion.
🌘 At the start of winter, the entire site falls into sunless days, creating a surreal, shadowed landscape. Be prepared for harsh conditions, with biting winds and temperatures that can plunge to –10°C. (14°F)

🗺️ Getting to the Nordic Site

Tucked away from the bustling villages, the Nordic site of Peisey-Vallandry offers peace and pristine nature — but reaching it requires a bit of planning.
🚍 Shuttle Options
- Direct Shuttles — A few direct buses run between the main snow front and the Nordic site. Some even connect to Les Arcs, making them a convenient option if you're coming from the broader Paradiski area.
Note: These are limited in number, so check the schedule in advance.
- Peisey Village Shuttle (Recommended) — The most reliable option is the half-hourly shuttle running all day between Peisey village (and the Lonzagne lift station) and the Nordic site. It’s a single continuous loop, operating in both directions, but be aware:
- ⏱️ Delays are common, especially when the shuttle is busy transporting alpine skiers from nearby villages to the Lonzagne lift or back home.
- 🧭 Plan ahead and coordinate your timing with the Lonzagne lift schedule to avoid long waits.
✅ This is the recommended route for most visitors.
🚗 By Car
You can also drive directly from the resort to the Nordic site.
🚨 However, during school holidays, parking becomes a competitive sport: if you leave your spot, you might not get it back. So think twice before hopping in the car!
🍽️ Dining at the Nordic Site
The Nordic area of Peisey-Vallandry is a peaceful, intimate escape but with that charm comes limited on-site dining options.
🏕️ Where to Eat
- Camping des Lanchettes features a cozy restaurant ideal for a warm midday meal.
- Nearby spots like Le Fer à Cheval and Le Petit Hibou offer everything from quick bites to hearty dishes, but be sure to check ahead for opening hours and availability.
🧺 Bring Your Own
There are no shops or takeaway services at the Nordic site, so plan accordingly:
- Enjoy a lunch break back at your apartment
- Or pack a picnic and savor it trailside, surrounded by snow-covered silence
☕ After-Ski Treats
When the skis come off, it’s time to unwind:
- The Nordic site’s main building, the campground, and nearby restaurants all serve up steaming hot chocolate or a refreshing beer — the perfect way to toast a day well spent in the snow!
